Position Summary
The City of Columbia, Missouri is seeking highly motivated and dependable individuals to provide a professional level of police services to our community. Police Officers enforce laws, protect citizens, prevent crime, and build strong partnerships with the community. Officers respond to calls, conduct investigations, complete administrative reports, participate in training, and provide court testimony as necessary.

Salary and Compensation



  • Missouri POST Certified Officers: $60,008 annually ($28.85 per hour) minimum to $73,153.60 annually ($35.17 per hour) maximum.



  • Shift Differential: $1.00 per hour for all hours worked between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am.



  • Lateral Entry: Officers with full-time law enforcement or qualifying military law enforcement experience may enter the pay scale based on years of service, up to ten years, at the discretion of the Police Chief or designee.



  • Not POST Certified: Academy tuition is paid for. While attending the police academy, salary is $42,717 annually ($20.54 per hour) plus $1.00 per hour shift differential for eligible hours. Upon successful completion of the academy and POST Certification, pay increases to $60,008 annually.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Enforce laws and ordinances to ensure safety and security of citizens.



  • Maintain positive relationships with community members and organizations.



  • Conduct investigations, collect and examine evidence.



  • Patrol city roadways, enforce traffic laws, and investigate accidents.



  • Adhere to legal protocols and department policies.



  • Participate in ongoing training and maintain required certifications.



  • Provide credible court testimony as needed.



  • Complete and maintain accurate reports and documentation.



  • Mentor and assist co-workers when required.



  • Regular attendance is an essential function.



  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or two years of college in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related field preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:



  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws.



  • Proficiency in communication, report writing, and active listening.



  • Ability to manage stressful situations with professionalism.



  • Capability to operate police vehicles, approved weapons, and equipment safely.


Additional Requirements:



  • Maintain a permanent residence within a 50-mile straight-line radius of the Columbia Police Department within 180 days of hire.



  • Work varied shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.



  • Successfully pass pre-employment medical, physical, and drug testing.



  • Maintain physical and mental health necessary for job performance.


Work Environment
Officers work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions and may encounter hazardous situations, loud environments, and hostile individuals. Physical demands include lifting or moving up to 100 pounds occasionally and wearing safety equipment when required.
